The University of Utah's Voice Disorders Center is able to provide comprehensive care for all voice disorders as well as laryngeal-based breathing disorders. Our team includes laryngology, speech pathology, vocal pedagogy, and voice research. Specialists from other medical and behavioral disciplines participate as needed. Patients are provided with a thorough evaluation, videolaryngostroboscopy, and well-coordinated treatment plans. The Voice Disorders Center has an outstanding reputation for care of the voice.

Laryngology

Marshall E. Smith, M.D., Associate Professor in the Division of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery is the medical director. He provides full-service care for diseases and disorders of the laryngopharynx. He is the only ENT physician in the intermountain west that provides all of the following services in a single practice.

  • Office stroboscopy and endoscopy (larynx, airway, esophagus)
  • Office-based procedures of the laryngopharynx
  • Vocal fold injection
  • Laser
  • Biopsy
  • Vocal fold microsurgery
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia Care
    Botulinum toxin therapy (vocal fold, jaw, and face)
  • Vocal fold paralysis management
    Laryngeal electromyography (EMG)
    Injection

  • Laryngeal papillomatosis
    Office laser
  • Laryngeal dysplasia/cancer
    Vocal fold reconstruction

Speech Pathology

Nelson Roy, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, Kristine Tanner, Ph.D. CCC-SLP (Clinical Director), and Dan Houtz, M.A., CCC-SLP have expertise and specific training in laryngeal imaging, evaluation and behavioral treatment of voice disorders. Therapy is provided for all types of voice and breathing disorders, including:

  • Muscle tension dysphonia
  • Vocal fold nodules
  • Neurogenic speech and voice disorders
  • Functional dysphonia
  • Laryngeal-based breathing disorders (paradoxical vocal fold motion)
  • Pre and post surgical voice care

Singing Voice Specialist

Faye Muntz, M.M. has a special interest in assessing singing technique and caring for singers with vocal injury. As a voice care team member, she assists with the evaluation and treatment of singers.
